Daddy's Treasure Chest “I got this for you Daddy” is the little song he sings He doesn’t really understand the happiness he brings “Come and look at what I made” are words I often hear I have a little box that holds these treasures oh so dear We call it Daddy’s Treasure Chest and it’s a special place For kept inside are gifts that bring a smile to my face From time to time I’ll take it out whenever I feel down It never fails to cheer me up and take away my frown Inside are little trinkets that no one would care to see But they are much more precious than a diamond ring to me A little hand drawn picture of the “Super Devil Dude” Some marbles and some colored rocks are things that I include Each item is a memory of loving times we’ve had A penny and a colored heart that says “I love you Dad” A hardened piece of bubble gum he brought me home from school To me this little heartfelt gift’s more precious than a jewel There’s a little colored sea shell that fills my heart with bliss Because he told me “Daddy we don’t have one that’s like this” It really didn’t matter that I had six more of them This one’s very special because it was a gift from him A rusty bolt and washer and a burned out little fuse Things that he found in the street he thought that I might use A little plaster handprint with a date scratched on the back A yo-yo with a broken string and a shiny bright thumb tack A plastic purple dinosaur and a box of pencil lead His favorite book of stories that so many times we read An old pair of sunglasses that are cracked next to the rim A broken rubber band to make a great sling shot for him And when my son gets older then I hope he’ll understand How great a gift he gave me with that broken rubber band And how much love is stored inside that little cardboard box Mixed with all the marbles, shells, and the little colored rocks Each item is a gift of love and memory of fun Given to a father by his precious loving son And if you ever ask of me what gifts I love the best I’ll show you an old worn out box called Daddy’s Treasure Chest |

Steve, I hope you print this out, put it neatly in a sealed envelope with your son's name on it -- and put it in Daddy's Treasure Chest. Someday, your poem and these words will tell him just how much you cherished each treasure and how much you cherish him. This is a beautiful tribute to you and your son. Thank you. A |

This touched me deeply the first time I read it. I searched for it today...to see how it was doing... It touched me deeply again. It is like some old Shirley Temple movie...I can see it a hundred times and it still floods my heart with emotion and brings happy tears to my eyes. I am saving it this time, as a wonderful addition to THIS daddy's treasure chest. Back to the top... |
