Lumpy Oatmeal makes me Crazy!

0 posted 2006-11-02 02:27 AM

Her shoes were new shoes
Creamy yellow canvas
With tightly tied white laces
Too, too pretty to be stained by damp moss
Or prickled with Devil’s Club stalks
Or dyed with fall’s ruby red cranberries
Braids fell over small shoulders
Carefully, she untied them
And set them side by side on a bared stump
Then ran barefoot through the beckoning trees
Crooked bangs framed excited eyes
Face smudged
Legs scratched by nettle bushes
And impatient branches
Dusk ended day’s play
As the girl returned to her new shoes
Seeking, looking
They were here
Or over there
Back and forth
To and fro
Eyes flooded with tears
Realization filled her
They were lost
Slowly, bare feet carried her home
Reluctantly, she told the story
And felt the anger
The night rains fell upon them
Damp of morning found her in the woods
She looked again and again
Each day she sought those two small shoes
Side-by-side shoes
On an old stump

Years passed, days flew
The girl one day came home
To a home with no home
She looked for history
Bathed herself in memories
As she meandered into the woods
Eyes filled with tears
She looked upon her past
Two small side-by-side shoes
Nestled upon an old mossy stump
Waiting for her.

They knew she would be back.

Thank you all.
I just write the memories
.. and sometimes them make me smile.

Okay, sometimes they make me laugh out loud.
