FATHER’S DAY In Nineteen ten in Spokane Mrs. Dodd started the day To honor Dads like her own In a very special way. Hers was a Civil War Veteran Who was widowed in childbirth He raised her and five Brothers And she knew what Dads were worth. She went and told her minister That Dads needed a day, too Like Moms and to thank them For all the good things they do. A State Holiday for years And some others followed suit But Congress feared if they Proclaimed It was their own horn, they’d toot. It took sixty-two years till Nixon Made it so across the Land So everyone could celebrate What Mrs. Dodd had really planned. The fifth largest greeting card day To tell Dads what they are worth For without them, even our Moms Would have never given Birth. So, give ol’ Dad a phone call Or if you can, see him face to face For like Mom, there’s only one That you never can replace. 06-18-2006 DAD'S DAY Those who have their Dads with them At least, somewhere on this Earth Are the lucky ones who know them The men who caused their Birth. There are so many millions Of orphans everywhere Who have neither, Mom or Dad Or anyone else to care. So many in this world today Don’t even know Dad’s name And many more through the years Lost them in War’s deadly game. Some relations are difficult And there may be harsh words, spoken But, even when we are estranged The bloodlines can’t be broken. So, on this Day to Honor them You must tell them, if you can “I love you Dad, and I’m glad You’re part of my life’s plan”. When you pass up, that moment To tell Him how you feel You’ll find there’s no more chances That your life’s time, will steal. 06-18-2004 I became a Great Grandfather yesterday with the birth of Xavier Jones, 9 pounds six ounces and 21 inches tall. All are doing great in Spokane. I also met Mrs. Dodd and hubby, Bruce when I was a kid as my Grandpa was friends with them. Beautiful poems, Abe! I am one of those who never knew their Father, he died just a few months before I was born. There were times when I really missed this presence in my life, but I had a wonderful Mother thanks to God. Appreciated your sensitive words. Welcome on Earth to little (big!) Xavier Jones! Congratulations to you too! Love, Margherita |

Congratulations to you and your family! Thank you for sharing these 2 great writes, they were great to read on a day like this. I read a quote by Maya Angelou stating "I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you'll miss them when they're gone from your life." That sort of comes to mind. Congrats, and happy Fathers Day to you! Danielle |
