Why do we wish for what we once had before?
It all seems so good when we look back on it
Friendships we’ve lost, family times, love
But when we long for what’s gone it hurts us
More than just living in the past, it hurts the future
We want what we have now to be what was
And yet it never seems to be that way at all
We yearn for what we do to be beautiful
For every moment to be as pristine as our fond memories
And for our fond memories to be as beautiful as we make them
But they are no warmer than now, no quieter
There are always conflicts, which we choose to ignore
Always pain that we choose to be numb to
Always a tear that is forgotten in time
Or a closeness that was never that close to begin with
And yet life seems to be better this way
To live in a kind of ignorance to the reality of your past
That way you can look back and say it was lovely
I think I’ll try to not think so much of what was good then
Maybe I’ll live more in the present and find out what’s good now

I am the two-toed wanderer
