Under apartheid laws, people were classified into a racial group (White, Black, Indian and Coloured) and geographically separated on the basis of the legal classification. South Africa was colonized by the English and Dutch in the seventeenth century. English domination of the Dutch descendents (known as Boers or Afrikaners), leading to a period of apartheid based upon race. Following South African independence from England, and power-sharing between the English and Dutch decedents, until the 1940’s, the Afrikaner National Party was able to gain a strong majority.
