Listening to every heart

0 posted 2006-08-14 11:38 PM

It’s Like This

It’s like this, in Kansas
when the summer of August
sweeps full swing 180 from heat to steam
to crystal hung trees ~

when morning gives loud her roll call to blue
and you awake to a sound sung clear,
beyond true

the day scurries with heat tamping down upon earth,
dirt puffs in scorched, weathered, awful birth, and
bugles of birds rocket a calling to arms

so suddenly clouds scream a distant alarm.

Thunder’s rumbling proves its intent
when breakers clash break, when moods are bent and
then, beneath

a deluge of dance, a summer’s late rain
and all fall from dry dance
like some gentleman, sane.

Electricity goes, no power to know;
some take to naps, others to some show
of things so awesome, so daring, so pure

that in witness of storm, comes to know one thing
sure
for amid the rain, the clouds, and deep bellied thunder ~
even though lightning forms rips the skies in some sunder ~
and air now weighs heavy with sauna-styled steam ~
and birds have been silenced from some strident scream ~

The little squirrel jumps from limbs to relish a treat
not minding the storm for nature’s grand feast
and then after time, oh, an hour or so,

a blessing of rain has provided some glow, and
amid droplets forming, yon sun sparkles through
washing the trees with crystals hung new

and squirrel is dancing all around this joy
as if there hung from a Christmas tree,
just from him, and were he but a small boy,
the joy of fresh crystals, from an afternoon rain
and none, no none, could feel any pain…

Then birds once more take over in round
the quaint that is felt before the soaking up sound
for so parched this earth, so thirsty it be,
that hungry, sucking sounds are maddeningly crazed, you see;

for in one quick gulp ~ and with none remaining
that some would run for some shade;
for the rain that stood for one,
no, but a brief moment or two,
was sucked into earth, not enough to renew;

though the skies overhead, they hold a promise,
that yet may be?

And perhaps, perhaps,

August will know a little more spree

and I will sit here to listen its roar

and the house and its holdings will know me

at four.

I can remember days and nights like this in Ohio, believe it or not...guess I'd better get my rainmaker out....just hope it is not a deluge.  Great read, SIL.  *hugs*...jo

extremely magnificant visuals...strong sense from a woman's point of view...absolutely taking the reader to a place in life, that doesn't seem so bad after the fact....we will survive and go forth, a little better, a little wiser.

Ahhhh.....thank you for this reminder (Smirk!) of why wild horses couldn't drag me back to Kansas!!!!

Wouldn't it be great if that storm were to, say, pick her up house and all, and deposit her in OZ (AKA Southern California)? I'd like that, and I think she would too, in the long run.....seems to me something like that did happen once upon a time....

The Tall Texan asks, "What is rain?"

As usual, beautifully done!

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

You helped me see the storm clouds, hear the thunder and feel that humid air.  Lovely descriptive piece.

Penned so vividly and beautifully as only you can.
So glad I stopped by 'home'..
I'll be gone again in the sunrise.
See you in September.
Love ya lady~

For it was not into my ear you whispered
But into my heart..
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul.
