Friday, August 11, 2006:

I remember
sitting on the front porch.
The busy DC street,
passing through our eyes.
With skaters flying through,
business men,
and people on bicycles...
Braiding your hair.

We would laugh
forever,
and your hair would take
three hours.
Because you kept moving,
and slapping your knees,
every time something funny happened...
But most of the time,
we'd just be laughing at stupid stuff.
I miss those times.

And you'd run off
to the bus
early Monday mornings.
Sticking you cocoa-brown face
out the window.
With your fresh
Sunday night braids.
I loved you more and more,
as you waved...
I remember that
day
like it was yesterday...
My little girl,
headed off to another day
of second grade.
So young
and so much more to learn.
I desired the days,
that I'd get to see her grow...

But then I'm in the kitchen
with the mini white TV,
doing the dishes.
And the next thing I know,
I'm rushing to my baby girls school,
on lock down.
Then at the hospital.
Then at the funeral.
And it all just comes back,
as little pieces like that.
So now I'm sitting on the porch,
alone.
Finally conquering up the strength
to write this poem...

This stunned me.  Intricate, and finely braided verse.
Well done.

Very well written
you gave me chills
and tears
and the need to hug my daughter
just because

*hugs* to you

What do I think?

I think my heart just broke a bit.
I think you were so generous to share this lovely person.
I think you are a wonderful painter of words.

I think ...

I just think that you shared a most beautiful part of your life.

If this is true..I can feel your pain. I lived in MD and live close enough and visit often enough to Baltimore and  watch the news enough to know the realness of this...

good writing

Oh goodmess. You had to go and make me cry lol. I have had some experiences lately to remind me how dear and near the children in my life are to me (and I don't even have any of my own, but its my sister's children who have hold of my hearts strings) All I can say to this is how beautiful, yet how sad all at once.
Thank you for sharing. I need a tissue!

I can hardly describe how deeply this poem grasped my heart.
In addition to its emotional impact, it is very well written, in fluid verses, with endearing phrases within the portrait of a beautiful child and a porch scene that oozes with love. All the best and the worst of life in this sincerely written and memorable piece. THank you for sharing

Thanks so much 4 the love.
Fortunately, I can say this hasn't happened to me or anyone I know. This poem just came to my heart...first picturing the Mother braiding the daughters hair...and the sadnes just came out...
Thanks for the replies.
Much luv,
Rissa*
