"The Road They Call Regret"

It's been so long, most of what he recalls
Are the reasons she walked away
And the teardrops fill his eyes
When he remembers the love they made
He thought she would wait forever
And she did hold on a while
Then a while became too long
And a frown replaced her smile
The things he had to do-
He thought time would surely change...
Without a single word
But that was his mistake
'Cause one day she had had enough
Of being lonely by his side
And she left him with "I love you -
But it's time I said goodbye"
"I can't go on like this" she said
The hurt now filled her voice
"If ever you think you can -
Find the courage to make a choice"
"You'll find that I'm the one you love
But by then I'll be long gone -
'Cause there are way too many reasons
Why this love we share is wrong"
"You have told me you don't love her -
Yet she seems to stay
So I must be the one to go
And as I leave, my heart will break"
Now on a journey that is so unknown
Where it is dark and always cold
And the lucky don't survive -
This trip he makes alone
"Pack lightly for your trip" she said
"And go saddle up your horse -
Your journey will begin
The moment I close the door"
He knew this trip was coming
Still he ignored the warning signs
But if he had cared to get close enough
He would have seen it in her eyes
Now thoughts like "If I had only done..."
Every second haunt his mind
And "I should have done today"
Because tomorrow is now lost time
He gasp and grasp for air each day
And begs for sleep each night
But heartache consumes the air he breathes
From the wrongs he just can't right
He's crossed through river's deep of emotion
That never fail to flood
He's seen oceans full of memories
And his journey has just begun
He rides a horse that's known as "Drifter"
The direction he rides is west
And the only place you'll ever find them now
Is on the road they call "Regret"

Many of your readers will have gone down a similar road. You wrote of it so descriptively and with such emotion. Engaging read!

May all your trails be happy ones!

Giving you a warm, welcoming hug,

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

Your my favorite WildHorses, I don't really like poems that long but you sure do have a way with words.
I like your ending very much.
