a phone rang sharply,
three inches to my right,
to interrupt a sweet-night-dream at 3am
and order me out of bed and into your reach.

with a mind too fogged-over
to clearly understand
the words that were spoken in  hoarse, slurred speech
i shook my head and wiped my eyes
as i stumbled through the dark and found the switch on the wall
turning it on
just to flinch away when the light glared harsh and white,
and flip it off again.

tip toe down the stairs, doll,
don't wake up the world.
close the door softly, and don't slip on the ice.
you'll crack open that pretty head you have.

i shoved my hands in my pockets
and stared at the ground as my feet quickly walked away from me
huddling my shoulders, and looking for the car
i knew would be stationed to
whisk me away to a place where you
always erased all the confusion i had felt by day.

it's so so black out, and my lips are icing blue
my eyes are ignoring my heart
and trying to close with all their strength.
you're the only one who ever could keep me up.

let's just drive away,
and ignore the windows that might be bright when we return.
all these places--they're so run-of-the-mill
and it's second-nature to forget to really look at them.
but when they're all closed and empty
they hold a magic, that they only share with me and you.

that blinking alarm clock of mine doesn't matter,
and neither does that date-book you hold so close.
the sun is gonna rise and force us to forget,
but until then we own this town
and you're only mine, and i'm your best known secret.

it got so cold so fast
it never phased you though, did it?
you never could feel a single-thing bad.

tires are swerving and leaving tracks in the snow
i told you that steering wheel isn't just for decoration.

we have to go home, and i have to wake up
hair needs to be washed
and i promise those scratches on your skin will fade.

same time, same place?
you can count on me-
i'm counting on you.

I leaned into this poem as I read it.  You engrossed me and I got lost in your words.

Wow, I'm not sure what I think right now. This was awesome. I, too, got lost in the words of your poem.. this was great..

elisalie, I grinned
at that line about the flipped light switch
it sure makes me flinch at 3 AM!

Nice one, elisalie.

This is the part that
stopped me cold:

"the sun is gonna rise and force us to forget,
but until then we own this town
and you're only mine, and i'm your best known secret"

Yes.
