http://www.discoverlebanon.com/photo_gallery/arzalrab.jpg *Land of White Come take us nigh to land of white Where Lebanon set free Does quarrel not with ones who fight And scuffle endlessly. Come take us high on mountain tops Near Syria to see Were calming of the snowflake drops Upon the laden trees So muffled by the fallen snow That hardly do they feel What war crushed, scorned and hurting know As agonizing real. Lighthouse Bob *The definition of Lebanon is "White", the highest mountain range of Syria, forming the northern boundary of Palestine, exploited for its splendid timber. http://www.godonthe.net/dictionary/index.html |

this is beautiful bob. Not the snads and heat and war that we think of in connection with this area. Love, Joyce |

A very interesting play with an interesting concept. I appreciate the annotation, as I'm sure pretty much everybody will. The imagery is superb, but at times I find it a little confusing. The trees hardly feel the impact of war, high on mountain tops? I would have thought they don't at all. It's possible there's a point you're trying to make that's lost on me, too, since I haven't been following this conflict at all. Altogether a triumph, despite that little detail that tripped me up. You know I'm one of your biggest fans, of course. Brian "To me, the thing that art does for life is to clean it, to strip it to form." |

Thank you Joyce, Tina, and Brian for your kind responses. I'm glad that you enjoyed reading my poem about the "Land of White" or Lebanon and I thought as I was viewing so many beautiful beautiful pictures of Lebanon on the Internet how nice it would be to post something in contrast to the many not so beautiful images that we see broadcast around the world today. The trees in this poem are a personification or a contrasting view in regards to the images that are broadcast by the news media today. They are a personification of calm, inner strength, and peace... ...and, I do think that this is especially notable since the symbol on Lebanon's flag is a cedar tree. I do pray and still believe that the people of Lebanon will find the above noted attributes even in the midst of this great atrocity of which they have become subject. God bless you my friends and again thank you for your kind responses. -Bob Here is a site with some wonderful pictures of Lebanon that you probably won't find broadcast by the news media...
