MIRRORS

Living in a glass house made of sound proof one-way mirrors.
I can see out and watch the world go by in my solitude.
I can beat on the walls and cry out, but no one hears.
No one to hear of my dreams and fears.
People come to look with curious eyes.
Maybe trying to see inside.
Still not hearing my cries.
I see the puzzled look on their faces.
Not feeling my lonely embraces.
I touch myself, for when I reach out, no one else is there.
No one to love me and no one to care.
But still they stare.
If at least, they could see the reflections
of me without objections
or corrections
and just accept my affections,
but the images they see
are their own.
They can't see past themselves.
They can't be shown.
They must look from the outside in and say this is me.
The honesty is scary to most.
It makes them vulnerable to the hurt of reality and a host of other feelings new and deep.
They find the security of hypocrisy gone.
The emptiness of their souls and weep.
Most return to the other side once more to hide behind their false pride.
Not knowing they've already died.
But maybe they aren't fools living by life's phony manmade rules.
Spending their life pursuing what?
Ending up when all is done with naught.
For, without love and compassion and the ability to laugh and cry and feel one another in their heart,
they'll never know the joy and pain life can impart.
Maybe they really are smart.
But as for me, I'll stay in my house of mirrors, alone, waiting for the day
my true reflection is seen by the one I love.

You let us see your soul through your poetry, dear Abe, and it's surely a sensitive one. It would be a pity to hide it, good that you reach out. The mirror effect works on both sides.

Beautiful poem.

Love,
Margherita
