the grass was long and pressed down deep with night
and the excuses we spilled during our attempts to swallow,
as we laughed about hours when the sun had been so bright
we'd had to squint our eyes and turn our heads.
my hands grew numb and i slipped off a bench,
landing head-first on the ground.
there we lay and looked up from an all-time low
to see the stars that got us high.
sunrise is scheduled for soon, i know,
i'm so sorry i only speak in the dark.
a few short hours means a different world
which may or may not be reality,
but beats us up none the less, without a thought.
at least the nights that we whitness so black
leave shades of blue on wrist and neck to
remind our heads why they're still spinning.
the same places at polar times
host settings and sequences that
are too close to accept but will slip away all too soon.
a line of gray rang harsh in warning,
telling us to make sure we were safely in bed with the doors shut and bolted
before we closed our eyes and were forced to wake up.

I like this a lot. I think the title says it all- a 4 AM memory. Makes me think of my own. Thanks for the read.
