Shadows of Canaan
10 July 2006

When hunger pains
steal from my soul
And words are but words
those distant places to drift

As if Ontario was not the only void for love
This Greater Toronto Area, as to Mississauga
or an Oshawian home, or Hamilton by the bay
Who knew love was in Markham, or London to be

While across provinces in hours of account
there she was, God’s South African angel
Sweetness, fondness, could this be love
this bride of Burnaby, in her British Columbian home

For want was pain, just a moment to linger
a moment to pause, this foundation built in kind
Where far above, the moon was full
and within those shadows of Canaan, love did dwell

The largest metropolitan area in Canada. In addition to the City of Toronto, in the Ontario
province, the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) includes the Regional Municipalities of York,
Halton, Peel and Durham. To consist of 25 municipalities and four regions in a total area
of over 7,000 square kilometres with a population of 5.6 million [2005].

Some municipalities that are considered part of the GTA are not within the Toronto Census
Metropolitan Area (CMA), example Oshawa, which is part of its own CMA or Burlington, which
is included in the Hamilton CMA. All the aforementioned places are part of the Greater Golden
Horseshoe, the seventh most populous urban grouping in North America.

The Extended Golden Horseshoe Census Region has a population of more than 6.7 million
people, containing approximately 21% of Canada’s population. This region consists of the
urban centres of Oshawa, Toronto, Hamilton and St. Catharine’s-Niagara, plus Kitchener,
Guelph and Barrie. It accounted for 59% of Ontario's population and 22% of the Canadian
population in 2001. Almost one-half of Canada’s total population growth occurred there.
[British Columbia is also a province of Canada]

I'm from Ontario and you know more about it than I do! Are you sure you're not a Canadian poet?!? lol

Very informative! Thank you!

~ and btw I especially enjoyed these lines:

"When hunger pains
steal from my soul
And words are but words
those distant places to drift"

EA, I joked recently that I must be the only "Canadian Poet", who has never lived, or been to Canada, but the Canada (Canaan) of my mind.

Since I have written a few hundred such 'Canadian' poems in the last 12 months, and created two publications entitled "Ontarian Beauty" and "Nova Scotia Gal"

just like my art work poetry, which has Canadian origins

As for my birthday Nancy, I got the worlds best birthday card in a email, and it was handmade and came to me from Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.

So even as my poem says, God's South African angel, She may live in Canada at present, only she is so sweet and kind.
