during the dog days of summer
the old ones say
snakes are blind
more likely to bite
owls leave cough balls
bones and fur
for witches to steal
bats hang in dark places
waiting

during the dog days of summer
the old ones
sit on the porch
sipping sweet tea
eyes never blinking
watching for rain

during the dog days of summer
new moon rides the clouds
on airless nights
the old ones
warn young’uns to beware
yet children in bare feet
leave sparkling trails in the dew
mindless of snakes
and witches

during the dog days of summer
the old ones say
dogs and women go mad
foam at the mouth
leave their masters
looking for cool relief

This could be the beginning of one thrilling novel !!  I love this.
Into my library it goes!

Oh, wow. I really love this.

and witches

Just brilliant. Thank you.

And the dogs howl at the heavy hanging scents that fill their nostrils
in the stagnant night.

Enjoyed this poem.

lol, I do believe you've encountered and now revealed some dog days and nights magic!
Loved that ending.

Kate, you see the life in every infinitesimal atom of existence and paint it with such exquisite artistry yet realism, that your poetry breathes.  I read your poems over and over, but this one I will be reading even more than usual.  You excel at endings, and this is a perfect example.

::smiles::    You are such a precious Time Machine.   You always carry me back to my roots.     Now...My wife is panting...I'd better go hose her down.    :: bows ::

Glad to take you home, Uriah. Now tend to your wife! lol

I’m glad you grasped my meaning Stranger. Thank you.

Steve, my homeboy, I believe we had the same granny with the same big eyes. Never scared me though.
