               Afternoon Obligation

My interest has gone as flat
               as these conference tables
               covered three times
               in large multicolored maps
               each one detailing someone's
               important boundaries
               according to
               an elaborately crafted key.

               Who knows what consequential decisions
               are about to be made
               by these few delegates
               reluctantly gathered around
               to scrutinize this gluttonous display
               of rich inks
which I have but a wan wish
               to decipher.

               I would rather be sitting
               quietly and alone
in the midst of the fresh blossoms
               of a deep black-soil prairie
               and watch the colors dance
               with the bison calves
               as the season unfolds
               in a mid-continent breeze.

OMG, I am giddy! Krawdad, this is superb. Yes, I can see this scene, and understand it completely, can smell the rich dark soil, feel it underneath my nails.
You've been holding out on us. Got some more gems like this laying around on that table?

Kacy, you are much too kind.
Glad you enjoyed this.

Krawdad?  Is it really you?
Where have you been..?
I/we have missed you so much!
Nevermind, you're home now...right?

This is wonderful writing!
I could actually smell the rich soil.

Dare we ask for more?
Welcome home hugs~Nancy

Sunshine,
Got a little prairie over your way, Karilea?
Kind of dicey mixing with bison calves, though.

When you do stop in again, I'd love to hear more about those bison. Perhaps, you would allow us to walk a trail with you, experience the essence of the herd through your eyes and mind, without disturbing their habitat.

Loved this, Krawdad!  Sounds like a very bad case of belated spring fever...or cabin fever.  Saving it.  It's real good to read you again.........jo

Oh! Oh! Oh! This is just up my nature trail!  Agree with Kate and both of Kacy's responses.

Kacy,
I'd love to hear more about those bison.
I don't get much time to spend with bison these days, but will keep this in mind.

JL,
Well, they were land maps.
If they had been lake maps, I would have had an imaginary fly rod in hand.
I hear ya'.
Thanks.
