Gilded lilies feigning sainthood shrieking loudly in the chaos, hoping, praying, almost saying, "please don't let the people see me." You scratch mine and I will yours but don't forget that if you fail, we'll all see to it that you never play the game to win again. A poem's just a poet in a word. |

And now for the rest of the story. I spent New Year 1971 visiting a friend of mine who had moved to what later became know as Silicon Valley. On New Year's morning we had a Rose Bowl party at his apartment in a singles-only complex. As I looked around, listening to a couple of dozen of the least genuine people I had ever met making snappy patter, I began to realize that not a word of truth was being spoken. It was just a rapid-fire litany of lies and half-truths. People whom I knew, from other conversations over the previous few days, couldn't stand each other, were "making nice" in a sea of duplicity and misdirection. When I had had all I could take, I withdrew to a stool at the breakfast bar and wrote this poem--just before I left for the 12-hour drive home. A poem's just a poet in a word. |

Nedj, oh how I know exactly what you mean. I have written poems/parts of poems on that subject and similar ones. Enjoyed your excellent poem. - Owl |

Hmm... Its very beautiful. The title made me think of a misquito breeding ground and so I was really not expecting the beauty of nature. However, thats what you dished out. Nice work. Oh and I love lilly pads in little ponds. *CaRi* |

"....let me live definite, shock by shock." I admired Stafford for saying that, and I admire this poem. It's a sentiment so seldom shared aloud, but felt I think, by anyone with self-respect. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

Thank you all for your sometimes touching, always apropos comments. I'm starting to think there's a future in the backstory thing. :-) A poem's just a poet in a word. |

seems we've seen the same stagnant scene mine was only an eight hour drive and the next day I was relieved to be working with 'low IQ charted' youth who spoke only truth at the breakfast table, telling me I looked awful, as if I'd been in a cat fight the night before |

LOL! midnitesun: I reversed the process. I had worked with "slow" kids a few years before this incident. And yes, they were all born without the deception gene. A poem's just a poet in a word. |
