I used to be Republican
then they stopped my check
I went to Social Security
to remind them
that I voted
the straight ticket
every time
And? It was a good day there.
There was no one else in line
or even waiting in the chairs.
So I walked up to the sleeping clerk.

She didn’t open up her eyes
but said “you have to take a number”
and I had to tell my self in mind
TWICE to shut my open jaw
that’s how dumbfounded I was
there was no one else around—
I thought for sure it was a joke,
(surely Allen Funt’s around)
But no, she opened eyes to nod
toward a paper roll of print
And so I thought:
“Ooooo-kay, I’ll play”
and ripped the number 86
from its perforation
and walked up proudly with my kill.

But NO--

“wait behind the red line please”
(Oh yeah, it was getting better)
So I played along again.
I stood there with an innocence
painted over my pained face
And then? She put some lotion
on her hands
and never blinked
called, “86!”

And so I won the lottery,
I jumped and screamed,
“YES! That’s ME!”
And turned to face
no one else
saying,
“It’s my lucky day!”

note: all of the above occurred as related except for the fact that I was never a Republican. I registered as Independant and that hasn't changed. I simply threw in the little white Republican lie for the sake of irony! (<--oooh, even MORE! )

lol@ your republican comment!

this made me think of my grandfather who, at 75, did change his vote after having many problems with his social security check. it makes me wonder just how many of our nations elderly have gone through this-years of loyalty and service to the country (both as vetrans and as hard workers) met by bureaucratic red tape. it saddens me to think that this is how so many people are treated.

not sure if that's exactly where you were going with this, but this was my impression. i love it!

You scared me for a minute. But then I knew there was no way! You couldn't even fake being a Republican for two seconds. However, you are g-o-o-d at making a Republican cringe! Having been a government employee, in my past, and having used government services, in my past, I'd be glad to vouch for the veracity of your story. Good thing we can laugh otherwise it would make us cry.

That happened to me in a DMV office. I couldn't even feign patience with the asinine woman behind the counter. Republican? I don't know...I registered independent, too! LOL ~ Karen

I really did used to be a Republican, Ser....but that was a few years back!!! Guess I am still registered that way and I'm going to have to do something about that I think...lol. Anywho, I got a kick out of this one...could just envision it. Power, ha! loves ya.......jojo

that's really funny!.  Thanks for the laugh.  Despite the fact that I've never seen a half-way decent photo of you, I could almost picture this scene in my mind.

And yes, that was a jibe about your pip picture.  All in good fun.  Need to borrow my digital camera?

The part about the Republician was funny. I did used to be one and changed once I became disabled. Your entire poem at the Social Security Office was the exact situation I and others have endured, for real. The ironic thing is it really wasn't a joke it was the truth.
