For two weeks the farmers chase their foes over neighboring farms and through megatropolis briar stows over the hedges, soy bean rows through fences newly sclupted (now cow-made-holes) tracking time and movement by what hooves and bent weeds show (but last night...) The night began to see the stars as they were, not bad or lost; the week had not broken its cycle nor cows had broken tresspathers pass, but for just a mini-sec in the barnyard their shadows sat, (unknowing of Farmer's wrath) Digesting a little corn and oats fragrantly sweetened with molass-sus/taining hope ~ the shadows long this bright day as electric fence is nearly whole Then, nudging noses will find their pay! For this little Gal's a'tired of chasing... And rather be dreaming in Blue Boy's hay! ~cathy~ |

Remind me to tell you about the great hog chase that had this non-violent person ready to kill a sow with her bare hands. LOL Dreaming on a haystack sounds like a MUCH better plan than herding animals who don't understand the concept of cooperation. LOL Enjoyed this! *S* |

suthern? The great hog chase? I'd love to hear it!!! I've had a few experiences with those intelligent animals, but nothing sounds quite as exciting as "The great hog chase." My experience rests in trying to teach them good manners: i.e. to keep their feet out of the hog trough! They were very good learners until I turned my back!!! Oh, I can only imagine the chuckles that your story will bring! Bring it on!!! and the thing about non-violence... we have never, hm, how do I put this, eaten one of our cows, but I'm ready to have a neighborhood barbeque right now! Care to join me? Thanks for sending me the smiles! hugs, misce |

Well, you certainly got me dreaming as I was remembering my youth and my living in a ranch house surrounded by them creatures and always being very very careful not to let any of them out.... and not always successful I might add. Enjoyed reading. -Bob |

Martie, It is! But, it is with its extremes; it is either Heaven or Hell, especially when the farmers have outside jobs to support the habit of play farming. It can be more intense at times than our outside work because of the lack of predictability and the safety issue. (Oh, I have stories to tell about that!) One can never predict the animals or the weather and the influence little things have upon others. I write about this stuff because I know there are less and less people who have had this experience or know others who have. My stories are from a small family farm background. (They would differ greatly from a corporate farmer's.) I'm glad that you enjoy my little snippets. misce [This message has been edited by miscellanea (06-22-2006 02:25 PM).] |

Now it's my turn to save! You've wonderfully painted some scenes from ranching and hinted at the sweeter aspects of hay...and maybe some roping techniques? LOL the night stars truly round this out...loved every word! ~Klassy [This message has been edited by Klassy Lassy (06-22-2006 06:40 PM).] |

Cathy, I have slept in a hay loft on a hot summer night and I can only remember waiting til morning so I could get out. Hot and itchy! Cousins in Delaware had a dairy farm and I loved being there. I remember having tomato fights and stepping in cow dung. I don't know which was worse, again the itching, from the tomatoes, or the dung on the shoes. That followed by a water hose fight in guise of washing up. Too much fun for a fifteen year old city girl who fell for her second cousin at first sight. LOL best to you, martyjo |

quote: You have me smiling here, dear Misc! You painted a great scenery. Thank you! To show our courage as children we used to "test" the electric fence with grass blades and the charge was quite strong I remember. Love and hugs from this old Swiss girl who never really familiarized with the mysterious cows. Margherita |
