As I sip my coffee light, waking from a restful night, Cream and double sugars please, I need the energy fix, As I read and read once more words brought from the night before, Make them resonate within my tired brain, and stay for a few hours. Let the finely sweetened caffeine, take a bit of Canterbury to glean, Just enough to hold so gently for discussing what was wrote; Tales of Merchant and Wife, examples of fourteenth century life That Chaucer wrote so strange and very long ago. Written far back in English history without aid of dictionary It reads a bit difficult to a still muddled brain. But though no so very clear, soon there comes Shakespeare With Ralegh and Marlowe, Sidney and Spenser in the mix, So mingle sweet caffeine and brain, listen close as the teacher does explain And retain the words of writers now so long gone. |
