What cheerless morning does greet With more blood spilt upon the street, What lacking of knowledge found Of the victim sprawled on the ground. Just another drive-by killing With a life senselessly spilling Staining the sidewalk with many a crack As it runs to gutters in paths of black Where many a motorist drove by Never casting a concerned eye To just another body laying there And they’re much busy to care. No officer I didn’t notice the shot In this area that sound is soon forgot, Too many times does it ring out clear What difference if it’s far or near Or if the body was once one known, It just adds to the gloom of my home, Yes I might mourn the life torn from her, But what’s another death on that corner? I know this one. New Orleans, pre- Katrina...the feds came in to investigate our rising crime rate, and as an experiment, they let loose with 800 rounds of "blanks" throughout various parts the city. There was one instance of someone reporting gunfire. Death had become our "normal". Hugs, sweet prof. There are some who still hear and care. |
