"O Brothers of The Wander Path!" (how I loved when he did this) Ned could be so grand sometimes and when he took to that canned heat he would call his audience and I would sit there at his feet waiting there expectently sometimes he would blow and sing burning rusty reeds of that Horner tucked into his hat and I would get to sing along them parts what called for harmony and on those nights he noticed me sometimes he even shared with me the parts of him unknown. Nathaniel was his father's name and I knew that for a fact: He was born a silver spoon his Daddy even laid these tracks that took us all to where we went - anywhere that was 'away'-- but Ned, he gave away his name and all the gold that was his claim. He walked away from Easy Street He chose to ride the M. & C. all of which he told to me when he was in the Sneaky Pete shivering the miseries of what he hadn't had to eat apothecary underscrub he had demons wrestling the angels for his soul. I took the benny off my back and took his sweaty head to lap thinking he would never know that I was not a lamb, below, and Angelina was my name according to the rules of road: Y'see? I cut my hair to sport and bound myself beneath my clothes so my "woman" never showed and that was rough some weeks. But hermit ways are understood and it was easy to get by if I stayed off to m'self and let the miles of me unwind nodding to rhythms of the land that whispered my real name the tracks that urged me "don't go back" to what I never was...I stayed, shadowing my Ned. He must have smelled my scent that night because he acted different when he shook his bindle stick when his head was twisted right back to where it was before he'd vomited his want for more and made me promise I would not repeat the things that he forgot that he had mumbled madnesses and screamed the dreams of his remorse and I must promise not to tell the others of his sadness..."it would be too much for them," said Ned. Thinking, "yeah, too much for you" I nodded and we spoke no more but waited for the squealing truth and spat the handshake for the ruse of oath upon the fly... Ned was grace in tumbling he always hit the ground running like one half of circus act he always bowed and tipped his hat that stayed, somehow upon his head until he signaled part of ways and yelled to me in something French or German, like I had the sense to know the difference: "auf weidershein..." would sail the wind. A goodbye that I would not heed "until we meet again" I thought and yelled before I bent my knees and took the plunge and followed Ned "Au Revoir" I said, instead, apostulated to the creed: I crowned him Ned, The Emperor and my he was a gentleman-- a Romany by my decree: Nathaniel Remittance man and this, my homage, to my king. * * * (to be continued? mmmmmmmmmmmaybe. and to fully appreciate the terminology used please consult: http://www.angelfire.com/folk/famoustramp/terminology.html |

Oh! I am constantly amazed by your work. I hear "Lily, Rosemary and the King of Hearts." Maybe it's the rhythm. This is an extraordinary piece of poetry. |

Like a novel in a few paragraphs. I'm still somewhat inside it. Thank you, poetess. It's only a tragedy after we bleed. |

I wanted to say thank you--and this one has me more than a little distracted, 'cause I know it isn't finished. But if it is to be a series, please understand that this would count as number II. The first was "buy me an epiphany" which was my attempting at putting word to the hobo symbolism of a "glyph"--the original graffiti. But if I hear more of the story in my head, I'll be sure to let ya'll know. Some days? I just type the stuff. Thanks for reading! and thanks to the madviking for finding the spelling error--which I shall leave because I hate those "edited" messages at the bottom of my screen. |

Seems it's a morning for stories too close to home. The reference to "Sneaky Pete's" however, finds me smiling... |

gawd... I SO love how you tell a story... As Jan said... "no matter what or who you write about.. you make it your own and take us there..." Indeed, you do... and this is no exception... More, please?... or has there already been more and I've missed it?... Love this, Karen... "When the power of love overcomes the love |

When I get frustrated, I come here and find the loveliest surprises of some of the kindest people I have ever known. I really just want my friends to know how much I appreciate them, and the graciousness you have shown me has made up for a whole lotta bad days. As for III? I got a little sidetracked. I started doing the research and learned just how much I do not know about the hobo/migrant worker lifestyle. Interesting stuff. thanks for reading and Love to all. I think I'm gonna read something that bends. |
