Do they tickle off your tongue, The words you wish to say to me, Or do they halt, Frozen as mine do? Stunted by fear, Overgrown with thoughts of rejection, I neglect to say what I truly feel. Hold fast my weary words, Full of conviction, I wish to speak them, boldly, Wave them proudly like a flag of victory. Why is it that we yield our words? Is the idea of love so lost and contorted in society, That one’s emotions should not be revealed? Alas, it is not conviction, nor a lost ideal, Rather fear that constrains us, And holds back what we long to say, Making every moment awkward and trivial. It is not your presence that I am threatened by, But rather the sharp thorns you project so easily from between your lips, And stab into my fragile ego. Teeth clenched tightly, Holding back every eloquent syllable I long to exhale, I choose not to speak these kind words to you, Rejecting any idea of love and affection with all its complexities and falsehoods. Rather I choose to take comfort with fear, Fear that has so regularly manifested itself within me, For I rather be alone, then alone in my feelings. |
