I have followed many highways,
I have eaten dust...
Traversed a lot of byways
In my wanderlust.

Missed a lot of chances-
Left much happiness behind:
But I've a wealth of happy memories,
That rest gently on my mind.

I've known a lot of people,
And I've had some friends.
And I may have some others,
But it all depends...

On just how much commitment-
A relationship demands.
Because a drifter can't be happy,
When he's bound by vows and bands.

I used to be a cowboy
In my younger days.
Though I'm a lifetime older,
I can't change my ways.

I love the Painted Desert,
And the Canyon's southern rim...
And the shadowed mountain valleys...
As the day is growing dim.

The stars that glow like diamonds
In black velvet, western skies,
The howl of the coyotes-
As they sing their lullaby's.

The sound of cattle lowing,
And the horses coming in...
Are the melodies I'm missing,
And I miss them bad, my friend.

Here Here Cowboy! I know the feeling all to well. You're sure not alone in that, my friend.

Know yourself before you try to know someone else.

You're certainly not alone in that Cowboy. Seems no matter what has happened in our lives we miss it when we lose it but your life sounds so wonderful and free. Great write!
