I held you softly, sweetly, gratefully,
to my pounding breast.
You whispered tender kisses to my heart,
and I could not protest.

I know one such as you,
could never true be mine.
Still I longed for your touch,
as a drunkard does his wine.

But love is more than make believe,
I know this must be true.
Because I cannot hold her in my arms,
