Winter The summer of gauzy blue shirts long brown legs morning church bells dusky blueberries unruffled pools of water is over so too is the autumn of yellow squash new rain boots slapping ankles smoke from fireplaces golden light of a table lamp now I gather recipes for wholesome dishes buy sturdy clothes made to last prepare my bed with soft memories winter has come I will spend the long hours examining dreams I gave up people I lost gathering people I love close feeding them wholesome food murmuring words only we understand singing soft low songs peering from frost covered windows at gentle nightfall I will lie in my bed of soft memories and dream |

The backward glance at summer leaves me wistful for the long brown legs I never had and the feel that summer belongs to youth. Your wordpaint of autumn and winter wrap me softly in the murmurings of your heart, like a stowaway intruder who is found and fed. The glows mellow with home and love ones. The cherished memories...it's strange. When we dream in youth, it is for making memories which burn. In winter, we warm ourselves in their fire, sustained in embers of the heart! I am so touched reading this. ~ Karen ~ |

Love this. A beautiful acceptance and preparation for winter's repose. Those of us who are in the winter of our life understand. Excellent writing. martyjo |

Oh, it's an evening for dreams...I'm so glad I stopped here, for if we do not dream, after winter comes....more winter. |

I'm not normally one to connect to poems very often, sure I find so many of them wonderfully written and just amazing, but there are only a few where it feels like the words were taken out of my head or my heart and put on a page. I really think this is one of those. |
