What did I do so wrong
to be put out on the street?
When you came home,
I came running to greet.
It's cold out here
and I have nothing to eat.

I have feelings,
I cry tears too,
I don't understand,
I have no clue.
Aren't you missing me
like I miss you?

We went for a ride
and all seemed okay
but you put me on the road
and you didn't stay.
I chased the car and cried
as you drove away.
Now they changed my name
to 'Stray'.

I'm hungry and cold,
no one will come near,
I am still waiting for you
to come back, but I fear
you just didn't want me
and the reason's not clear.

All I wanted was to love and be loved.
It's not my fault that I'm here.

Why did you leave me to fend for myself?
All I had was you, I have no one else.

Oh my goodness, Dixie girl....you got tears coming
from my eyes now!! You wrote this so well that I could
"see" the scene through your words.

This just breaks my heart with little animals.
And just think of how many little children are
practically thrown out into the world to fend for
themselves. They aren't called strays, but some
are so
neglected that it's terrible!!

Good writing, Dixie.
Hugs,
Ethel

She had been homeless three times when she came to our door, something we learned because the neighbors in our new neighborhood knew her; but we loved her forever, even though that has barely begun and she is gone from us.

This is so good!
It's a shame, but too often so true.
This one really hits home!
I love this one.

Dixie, this is a great write and I don't think I've ever read another even remotely similar.  It is such a terrible thing to discard animals...this has always bothered me so much....good for you for putting it into a perspective from their standpoint!

You did well with this one Dixie.  Even an old bushie like me felt for the old mate.  I've had a few dogs through the years and they were real good mates.

There's four things in life that I definatley don't share.

My Dog
My Chainsaw
My Guitar
My wife

and in that order.

My wife's always telling me I saw romantic things.

Enjoyed this one.

You are one talented lady to have put those thoughts into rhyme and out of the mouths of puppies. I guess we are all like puppies at one time or another. You Are Loved.

Ethel, this is for sure a tear-jerker for anyone who loves animals. Thank you for letting me know it touched you.

James she knew love with you

JL, thank you so much for reading. I'm glad this hit home for you. That is the greatest compliment a writer can get.

Martie, I know...those sad puppy eyes just do me in too. Thank you.

Jo, thanks for the comment. It's a bit off my usual writing, but I felt it had to be said.

Helen, thank you for reading and commenting. Your words are always appreciated and taken to my heart.

The Grey, thank you...quite a compliment from a great poet such as yourself. Thanks for the giggle.

Martyjo, thank you...always reminding me I am loved.

Dixie Your kind caring heart shines bright thru the words of this tender poem.
A sad reality that hopefully someday will go away. The same could be said about all the homeless people on the streets that no one cares for...Paul

sighing...we're having a dawg problem here in New Orleans too.

It's spring, and sadly, lotsa pets that were left behind are busy doing their springtime thang...

I wish I could bring 'em all home.

Toe, thanks hon

Paul, thank you, and you are so right about the homeless people too. Makes me wish I could win the lottery

Karen, my heart goes out to all those poor animals left behind. I remember watching videos of the rescues, both people and animals, and I thought how I would have loved to have been one of the rescuers. Some true heroes emerged from that tragedy, for sure.

I grew up way out in the country where so many people dumped their unwanted animals... I had years of love and devotion from found friends... but so many of the tossed-out ones didn't live long enough to find homes. You write that horror and sadness so well. Excellent write!

This was a timely read for me. This week my daughter adopted a stray cat from the Humane Society. At the shelter the staff had named her Emily. Apparently they had fallen in love with her and didn't want to see her go! Emily has already become a beloved member of our family!  Cat 11

Your poem and the pics of the pooches were real heart-tuggers!

Sobs for them all.  I wish your poem was fiction, but there is so much of it in the world and I too wish I could help them all.

Thank you Earth Angel, or rather your daughter and you for adopting and loving Emily, the cat.  Thank goodness there are angels like you so that there are happy stories too.

You see it is this kind of fine writing that has been missing here. Now that it is back, the poets can set their standards high, but never get as high as you..a poem full of heart warmth, but told so well..thank you Dixie..
