There was a cut of garden hose "Short," she said, "about three feet" just enough to flex the threat and duct tape was a grip to keep the hand that whupped the children free of blisters and no need of glove-- her mama wasn't mean, y'see, she'd named that damned pipe, "Love." "Susie, c'mon out to play!" sometimes I helped her with the sheets pulleys and the smell of bleach she'd shadow in the sun. Sometimes we'd play in silhoutte wtih clothespins ready in our teeth in case we heard the screendoor squeak: Susie lived in fear of Love. She looked at me and lit a cig-- nodding, "that was how we lived" eyes blue steel of leveling, Susie laughed in bitter bleed: "And mama called ya'll weird." |

Karen, I've always loved your writing. Remember when I first came here, I couldn't understand some of it? Well, I can understand it all now.....and that's a good thing!! Hugs, Sweetie Ethel |

For those who were concerned enough to ask--this is completely from my imagination, and was inspired by a talk I'd had with my Mom regarding how "things were different" way back when. What is abuse now, was considered "love" to some misguided people. She told me the story--I just took the ball and ran with it. So thanks for reading. and thanks mom, for showing me a part of your life to which I was previously clueless. Love to all? *wince* The good kind. |

This made me wince, too! I remember a razor strap and baleful icy blue eyes. It was never in the name of love. I also remember a woman who was a sitter for my mom when I was four. She took care of other children, too. She punished us one day by lining us all up. We had to bend over and put our hands on the floor. Then one by one we each had to take a paddle she had and strike each of the other children. I'll never forget that woman sitting on a chair, her hair wrapped in a bandana. She leaned forward to rest her arms on her knees as she rubbed her hand together and watched us with a weird pleasure. I knew it was wrong to hate, but for the first time in my young life I wanted to fly at her and scratch her eyes out! Thinking of it now, I suppose it probably seemed to her that she was just doing her job. But to me, she was as mean as the old tom turkey she kept in the front yard who used to rush at me and try to peck at my bare legs. ~ Karen (That is one of the earliest memories I can recall. hmmmm!) |
