To Stretch

I wanted stretching,
movement out,
out of this little space
where words fly around like
flecks of air in the sun,
haphazard as dust.

And I see now that stretching
is something that happens
to the coil of road
that travels through
the mine fields of the spirit,
sometimes you slither on it,
for explosions hurt
and pieces of you could fall
in enemy territory,
then you’d have to sort out
who is, and who is not the enemy
in the face of promises that pass
and do not say danger,
and I must remember that
the meadow across the street
looks even prettier
then the one beneath my feet,
but it is not.

I prefer just to stroll,
for if I show fear the lion will
chase me across the tundra,
peacefulness is the key, you see,
to staying alive,
and then when I’m sure that the ground
will hold my big thinking,
then, jump and shout,
run and slide across the feeling,
dig a hole, just so
to plant joy, and then sit back
and watch it grow
but remember it will need tears,
there is just no getting around that.

It is really all so complicated, isn’t it,
this thing that bleeds feeling,
this heart that breaks and sheds so much crystal
and all these thoughts now like marbles
rolling away from my meaning
until all I can see is a rainbow of color
collecting against the horizon
and sinking slowly from violet to crimson,
so hot now in its proximity to knowing
that it hisses as it touches the first star.

And does any of this make sense anyway,
and does it really matter if it doesn’t
for I still have my space
and I can see that I have stretched some,
there are marks to prove it,
imprinted into my
glazed and jeweled reflection,

yes, I have stretched.

Martie - and when I grow up I'm going to write like you!  The stretch like the dreams are all well and good if one can express them in a manner befitting their amazing mystery and you do that to perfection.  Thank you so much for this re-post!

dig a hole, just so
to plant joy, and then sit back
and watch it grow
but remember it will need tears,
there is just no getting around that.

It's so easy to forget that price for joy's growth until it's required... and when payment is due, so easy to forget the goal of bloom when bleak is overwhelming. Beautiful reminder! *S*

A fitting gift, from one beautiful human being to another....and a welcome wish for anyone.

"...yes, I have stretched."

If you haven't by now, I hope you will very soon....and in poetry too.

hi martie

this is a wonderful piece....indeed a peaceful reminder....

And so it those we live with
and should know who elude us
But we can still love them
we can love completely
without complete understanding

... and when you write my mind is stretched ... and I love it!

Martie,

This is why you are high on my list!  Such a beautiful and sincere poem!  I could have easily copied the entire piece, but this, in particular, sang to me:

"and then when I’m sure that the ground
will hold my big thinking,
then, jump and shout,
run and slide across the feeling,
dig a hole, just so
to plant joy, and then sit back
and watch it grow
but remember it will need tears,
there is just no getting around that."

I'm sure she will value this gift.  I know I have, and it wasn't even written for me!

Martie, And then soul stretches to touch a star and one by one the mysteries of joy take root.  I am loving the meadows of your mind.  Lovely!
