I’ve been a lot of miles down this old highway- Like the dreamer who keeps seeking pots of gold. For years I guess I had to have things my way. Alas, I realize I’m growing old. I rode my share of broncs when I was younger. Before the aches and pains set in to stay. I limp today, and is it any wonder- My hair is turning loose and turning gray? There was a time when I was lean and lanky, But middle age has brought a sad decline. The shadow that I cast is so much wider, I often have to ask, "Is that thing mine?" I used to think that I would live forever... My younger brother also felt the same. And all I have to mark the boy’s existence- Is the cold, gray, granite stone that bears his name. My baby boy is almost big as I am... The children that I raised now raise their own. The years all seem to pass so much more quickly- It seems I blink and more of them have gone. You ask me, "What’s the purpose of this missal?" Graffiti etched upon the walls of time... If you should hap upon some fading footprints, I just want the world to know, they once were mine. |

A good poem of interest, which is let down by your choice of words in one line "My hair is turning loose and turning gray?" I feel you should not have used the word 'turning' in the same sentence. It might have been better if the line read as: "My hair is turning loose and going gray?" a poet who cares |
