in the shadows

This is a gritty town,
gray,
cold and dreary,
I’m glad I’m only here
just passing through.

The locals have a smile
they turn on out-of-towners
like artificial light that has no warmth;
they tell me of the bars
where I can get hammered,
and gorge on eating birds their special way,
but I haven’t heard a single one say “Welcome”
and I think I understand what has occurred.

This place had to have been settled by the desperate,
19th century strugglers
trying to survive
by a lake that is quite cold and unforgiving,
and then like all good talking monkeys
they made the best they could of staying alive.

Those views on their survival formed a baseline
that they then passed on to all their kids,
so now the descendents never realize
that there are places
where when the sun shines
no one has to greet it with surprise.

Please don’t mistake what I’ve been saying,
they seem like honest folk who have it hard
I see it in their ways and in their manners,
I see it in the glitter in their eyes,
maybe it’s unfair of me to share a snapshot
of just the few short days that I’ve been here
in a city where the wind blows like it’s on a mission
and the people keep praying hard for Spring.

Well, I hope that you at least got to sample some of those Buffalo wings! They're to die for! ~ Mind you, if one were to eat copious amounts of them, the cholesterol could kill!

I'm from Niagara Falls, Ontario. ~Practically a stone's throw away from Buffalo. Perhaps if you were to visit Buffalo when all the snow has melted, you'd find the people "warmer"! Flirty

Yep...Been there, seen that

The land where it snows simply because the wind is blowing

A 1/3 of downtown abandoned (or so it seemed)

a bar on every corner

But I saw "Fish Frys" as being way more iconic than the famous wings

And though I can get fried fish and a Makers Mark pretty much anywhere...there's something there I can't do long without

I think many people in many places are praying hard for spring....even California!  Travel safely!

smile

I was thinking somewhere along similar lines, but I'll save that for another day.

But trust I understand, tough times shared makes for a certain clannish mentality.

It's a dubious club, ain't it?

I love you so much, I could just eat your brain. (that's a compliment for folks who might be wondering! )

Some places, folks just dare you to live.

The whole state of North Dakota's like that, something to do with the Russian heritage no doubt....

That makes me think of my own home town.

That makes, me simultaneously homesick, and glad I don't live there anymore.
