If you’re going all the way
to Forsyth County
take this to Uncle Rog
tell him it’s from the one he called
the silver child

tell him
I can still see him sitting on the front porch step
of a summer evening
fireflies flirting with his slick backed hair
his low voice building
the world for us
with his words

tell him I can hear the stories
of nights when the sky filled with lightning
and mornings when the sun
baked the ground
and trouble rode the air
tell him I remember listening
to the memories rise up
while the moon rode the clouds
and we children sat in careful silence
lest we missed a word

just when we thought
he was going to forget
young’uns needed to go to bed
before daybreak
he sighed
rolled up the sleeves of his white shirt
tipped his head back
and sang Precious Memories
in his gravel voice
not worrying a whit
that he couldn’t sing
just pleased with life

ya’ll go on now
it’s quarter past dark
your beds are cold without you

If you’re going all the way
to Forsyth County
take this to Uncle Rog
tell him his words
forged the
silver child
true

Oh, he hammered those words
well into you....

silver child, indeed.

This is my kind of poetry....

deep and warm
full of heart,
and love.

Thank you.

This poem captures so much of another time and place.
It is so life like and filled with a deep sense of love,
that forged the silver child true!

Love that!!!

What a treat to read, wonderful work, Lady~

Reminds me of one of my uncles
and the stories he used to tell us.

My Grandad did the same thing.
Good memories you brought to mind. Thank you.
Hugs,
Ethel

Oh, Silver Child, your words are golden!  I have good bumps reading this, as if I time travelled right back there with you!  I used to love to listen to the adults tell stories when I was a kid. I would try to make myself as invisible as possible so they woudn't send me away, too.

I wish I could write the way you do--and frequently, too.  This one is definitely a smile write.  Hugs, ~ Karen

How they captivated us those old story tellers.  The world seem so large back then and the stories so real.

Lady this brings back memories and they are so precious.

Karen, we are so lucky to have grown up with storytellers. Thanks for your reply.

I am glad I brought back good memories for you The Grey. Storytelling is a real art.

. . . and I sat like a child in careful silence, arms clasped round my knees, lest I missed a word of Kate's . . . still entranced!
