somewhere traveled (In Homage to e.e. cummings, for Nicole) too young, they say, to close up yet yet yet it was you who took down that first button like a petal, and now life aches to shut itself (like cold windows or a blanket returning to its place when its body has abandoned it) to clasp down suddenly, as when the heart of a flower imagines the snow carefully everywhere descending, down, down, littering everything. i would be entwined only in you, littered only in the tinniest hands, smaller, even, than rain or doubt or all i know |
