The Rays of Sunshine

The muted shaft of Sunlight
Crept through the gash in the fractured wall.
It fell upon its victims
With an antisocial motion
That disrupted the ticks of time.

Casting shadows too small
To veil my murdered eyes.

The ray that was once subdued
Evolved into a rage of luminosity.
As the shadows dissipated into the air,
The Light let out its fury…

I fell onto my back
And slowly closed my eyes.
And it was there
That I waited.
Waiting for Darkness
Like I did the day before.
So that in the Darkness
I could see once again.

About two weeks ago, I went to the eye doctor complaining about my eyes. Apparently I have something called ophthalmic migraines, which is a severe migraine without a headache. An ophthalmic migraine impairs your vision critically (like looking through shattered glass). Sunlight mostly activates it. As an aspiring filmmaker, I rely on my vision, so I have some aversion for light, go figure.

I'm sorry to hear about your vision. That's a shame. However it spoke out in your poem so well. I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

You have inspired me to write a second site of sorts--I hope you don't mind, but I was moved by your poem and...well...

I hope you don't mind.

I think you see better than many-not that it helps, but I truly do.

I have migraines, but with the headaches.
An intriguing write. I enjoyed the way you allowed light to flow through a fractured wall. Do you wear special glasses outside now, to protect your eyes?

Unfortunately no Midnitesun, glasses don't seem to help. I am seeing a neurologist and he says there is not much to do except wait for them to end. I'm on some eye medication but it hasn't helped yet. Thanks for your input. And thanks Enchantress, I'm glad you liked it!   - Ed Grim

My husband has a vision problem that preceeds a migrain...it's called scintillating scotomata.  He sees beautiful colored lights that gradually get so large that he can no longer see.  It sounds a bit like your problem.  Your poem really described it well.  Good luck.

sooooooooooo happy I was directed here, you write beautifully and these lines, oh I wish I had written them myself:

Casting shadows too small
To veil my murdered eyes.

If you had not explained, actually I did not see your explanation until now, I read this as a plea for peace and a rebirth.

I am sorry to hear about your condition...I hope there is something you can do. On the other hand this was a beautiful poem with some of the best descriptions I have heard.

I am so sorry to hear about your condition.  Surely photo-sensitive glasses would help?  Not that I am a doctor and I know your doctor knows better than I do.  Beautiful poem, Ed.

I used to get debilitating migraines until I decided I didn't want them any more and I didn't - as dramatic as that sounds, that is how it happened.  But then, mine were caused by stress, not a physical/medical condition, so I suppose that explains it.
