Simple Things

I remember the smell
of tangerine skins
slowly baking on top
of kerosene burners
Where W.P.A. workers
warmed their cold frostbitten hands
I passed them every day
on the way to school
yes I remember
simple things.

Oh yes, We looked forward to seeing them each day. They were doing some kind of special work. I did not appreciate the WPA then as I did not understand. They were  workmen to me. But over the years when I realized how many bridges were built, artist were helped and the many things they did, I knew how wonderful it was to be able to keep these men working and their families fed.
