Sunrise is a beautiful red today,

It has been a short night,
it will be a long day looking back on the year;
I have stuck in my head
the Willie Nelson song, “It Didn’t Have To Be That Way.”
...and yet I know it did.

We are not so free as we would like to be
though we live surprised only
when our worlds of luxuries somehow are diverted;
we allow the media
to grow perverted,
to run out of control like children beating parents
with the glee of new found power
as they shower us with us with image triage from their fragile little minds,
as they choose how
to create our fears of the world for us,
rather than to think for ourselves;
we let our politicians shrink from their responsibilities
as they wave second hand banners for false causes,
as if they have thoughts
that are their own,
and we can not even blame them
for we are sleepwalking through our lives
by our own choices,
ignoring quiet voices of the world’s most desperate needs.

Who feeds the young and old and hungry
when we celebrate tonight;
who comforts sick and dying
in a world that’s given up the sight to clarify our own existence?

this is so true...I find myself changing channels or tuning out because I can't listen to the news anymore ...I find myself talking back to it many times in disgust.

Some do this...others I think really do care...but there is so much to do that one persons outstretched hand is not enough...or is it?

And I am also thinking of two grand ladies who have been subjected to the control of their adult "children" who think that they know best....Disregarding that these ladies have been in charge over seventy years and eighty years respectively..... so now that things do not look so good to younger eyes they take control.... some with love and caring and some with sullen feelings of quilt, to do this. Either way the older ones lose their identity, their control and their love... and they confide to me a wish to run away or just lay down and die.... martyjo

I have never much liked New Year's Eve...oh, there were a couple of wild parties in my college years, but for the most part, it does not seem a time to celebrate; more a time to reflect and hope. My toast to your health tonight will be in the privacy of my home with a sip of my favorite indulgence (as I rarely drink now). No party, no balloons, no noisemakers, just a quiet ponderance. But, lol, if you would prefer that toast be made with a cup of coffee (for sobriety) or a glass of water (for clarity), well, no problem. Perhaps, the thought is enough.

I will be on duty tonight, literally, caring for a handful of those who cannot care safely for themselves. And my group home residents have asked me to wake them up at 11:50PM so they can watch the Times Square celebrations. Only two of them are even aware of the time differences east/west. But it's always tape-replayed here, so they should be able to view all the festivities. It's their right to watch or not to watch. They do not see what you and I see. So much money for balloons and light bombs, and so little available for the basics, like health care and food and...well, I'll not go on and on, since you already know what I mean.
