The Asylum I sit naked in the counselor's office. The counselor drones: Now let's talk about your feelings. I tell her I won't talk. I was in a locked ward one New Year's Eve and realized that this is one of the few human "holidays," perhaps the only one, that is totally artificial, created simply for the human need to mark time as significant. It has no link to other parts of existence; it is diconnected, apart from the world and not always especially sane in how it is celebrated. It is not linked to the Earth and its seasons, nor to any political, religious or ethnic pride. Very simply someone decided it should be. Looking around that ward at the many who were just as disconnected, just as insanely altered, I realized that every day for most of them it was 1 AM on New Year's Day...every hour of every day...and some one else had decided that for them. Just a memory and a thought provoked by your poem. |
