High above the farmer’s fallowed fields,
chasing shadows at dusk on a wintered night,
a soaring hawk suddenly shifts his flight,
descends into the darkest furrow,
grasps scurrying critter that tries to burrow

but in a split second, life’s details are revealed
in the demise of a wee critter’s entrails,
while the hawk survives to see the morning light
to soar again, blessed with keen eyesight,
high above the farmer’s fallowed fields,
to chase shadows at dusk another night.

Kacy where I live now, I actually saw a hawk so close - only to find out from a neighbour it was thinking of having my cat for lunch   He came from no where to swoop by my back balcony, and it never occurred to me why.

Happy New Year's you two ladies.

It seems important that I speak
of life in a growing small city
where once life was agriculturally
resplendent...

and now...the hawks, chicken and red tail
and otherwise

hover our back yards, in search....

they are very hungry....

and I thank you, Kacy, for letting me reflect
on the beauty of the need.

Nature sometimes makes me cry even though I know it has to be.  Life really is a survival game for humans and animals alike and I guess we do what we have to.  Enjoyed the read.

We've been seeing them here, again.

Tell me oh wise one, is that a good sign, or no?

hmmmm...

I love them though.

They are what they are, and gracefully themselves with no apologies.

Helen, Jo, JL, K
thanks!
and yes, serene one
hawks and such things that fly around and eat rodents are probable VERY good for N'Orleans area, especially these days, when some of the rodents lost their ..ummm..former domiciles and may be scurrying about without an agent seeking new homes
