Sissie’s Christmas Letter The little tow-headed girl so fair Found a Big Chief with paper to spare Put it on the floor, found a crayon, green And wrote to Santa of her dream. Dear Santa How are you? How are the elves, And Mrs Claus, too? Are the reindeer happy and fed? For a long trip they’ll take Very soon, I hear, so Santa, Take extra care of your reindeer. Santa, I’m writing for my brother, For my father, and mother, too. Bobby needs some cowboy boots And a horn that will give a toot. Father needs a hammer and nails And some socks to warm his toes. Mother needs some patience, I hear, For whenever I come near; I’ve been a trial, a pest, it seems And have a problem getting my room real clean. Please bring an extra, empty sack, For I’ve some toys you might take back, And with a bit of magic's repair, I’m sure The dollies’ measles will all be cured. Mommy says I got carried away When playing hospital the other day. She made me sit and read my books, And I read all five - I am hooked!! Santa, never before in all my life Did it feel so good to be alive! The books took me on great adventures, far, And even told me of Jesus, and a star, And of animals who talked on a midnight clear! Santa, can you hear your own reindeer? Then Santa, there was a book, with all the words inside it in rhyme So that’s my wish, if you have one, A book for this magic in my mind. Because this book gave me a dream That someday I would be Someone who could write and draw Pictures in poetry. The little girl finished her letter that night Put away her crayon, folded her mail up tight, Asked her Mom for a stamp and envelope And sealed her missive with love, and great hope. To the mailbox she walked the next day Raised the red flag, her heart was so gay. She strove to be good, and cleaned up her room ~ Mother found patience as Sissie used her broom. Christmas day came, with boots for her brother Lo, Patience was still alive in her mother, Dad had his socks, his hammer and nails And brother had a horn, and a song he did wail! The little towheaded girl had looked high and low, For all that her stocking had held luscious loot, But nothing seemed wrapped just for her with a bow, Though her dollies' measles all seemed to be cured. They sat around the tree, for Santa’s magic was swift When one dolly seemed to shake, then shimmy and shift And off she fell upon a package this small The little girl wondered about her clumsy doll. Then fingers found that package wrapped prissy, And on it, a name in bright gold, for Miss Sissie. In it were books from Doctor Seuss in green trim And a great book from the old Brothers Grimm. And on the bottom, to her delight, Was a grown-up pad of paper, so white, And several pencils in number 2 lead The sight of that, well, it went straight to her head. Then on the bottom there was a note, From Santa it was, here’s what he wrote, Miss Sissy, I think it is very clear You are meant to be a writer, my dear, So practice your words, your spelling too I will watch for future letters from you. Christmas indeed was very special that year And each one that followed held memories dear. ![]() "There's a reason they call God The Creator - he sides with talent." Julia Cameron |

I was called Sissy also and I remember the year! I was eight years old. I found an old fashioned desk of oak. T'was somebody's before me. All carved like those oak pieces were. I think it was the kind they gave out for coupons on the soap. Yes it was that old and I loved it so. In the drawer I found paper, and pencils, and ink bottle and pen. The kind you had to dip! And pads so dear. I also showed a desire to write at that tender age, but you miss Sunshine did it for both of us. Thank you for your book Yesterday's Love... martyjo |
