My hope stumbles briefly amongst the
cobbles of smoothest stone.  Slippery
upon the sweat laden parcels laid to rest
carefully by worn hands.

It seems so futile as a street lamp flickers
the youth of me away into the night and
shadows mingle in wait of an hour that
will pass softly into the dusk.

For the darkness hides the weary eye,
calms the burden of one’s toil and
labors on into the eve, riding a horse
before the squeak of a chariot’s
wheel.    A blend of laughter and
solemnity.  A blush of a sigh playing
games with the ear....raising a brow
lightly against the chill that swirls
and sifts the gutter’s crack.

Once the dawn walked the stones
and lay to rest upon a window’s
sill.  Casting a karat of glow
through the pane into the slumber
of closed dreams and opening
sight.  It was then my soul ached
and begged for in such a futile
way....Then when the carriage
slowly took me backwards into
a time of Bards, Beaus and Beauties.

And the band played on into the
beckoning night of silver moons,
chandeliers and soft silk scarves...
In a time no longer seen....though
ne’er forgotten...
