A badge of pain she wears, and wakes the virgin white, alive, with crimson words off splattered ink, she stands, a leafless tree in full disclosure to her maker in her stance of grace, her battered branches whip the sky's veil off its pious face, she sheds of sweetness to the audience, of her sufferage, then smiles when shadows sink beyond the sun that takes its nightly sleep, she winks, and walks the martyr's aisle, with the others flipping birds, and laughing wildly at their given fate. |

Michele, you never cease to capture me. Maybe, it's because I love trees so. No, it's the WAY your write of nature. Your analogy in this poem rings bells for me. To me, there is one tree (in particular) that represent my own soul in a way... or rather, the aspiring of my soul. I've got a tree poem, I'll post someday and dedicate it to you when I do. I wrote it when I was 17...after a tree stole my heart. I would drive for miles just to sit there on the side of the road and gaze upon it. I still think of that tree, which I dubbed, "my tree," and wonder if it still grows solitary out in that field. .....jo |

I am confounded but smiling here. Y'see, I have been working on something for some time which used one of my favorite historical persons as a metaphor-- Elizabeth, The Virgin Queen http://ise.uvic.ca/Library/SLT/history/virgin.html and now, you have written quite succintly all that I was hoping to convey. Since I can't possibly say it any better, pardon me while I go yank a few pages out of my marble notebook. |
