I can count the lines and syllables
and rhyme according to
or give it to you straight
dependant on my mood
but, damn it, what’s the use
of stupid poetry?

I can speak with tenderness
of my fondest memories
but, damn it, there’s a sting
to remembering
and the mystic ever after
that holds my favourite dream
a monster evil and grotesque
in the spirit of my feel.

I can deal out simple words
from the inner or the outer
but, damn it, I can’t shuffle
the truth into a lie
or play my hopes and wishes
with a straight poker face.

I can speak of trees as being me,
the rose my layered soul,
and the sky my mind’s testing ground
for all I think is real
but, damn it, I’m no freak
in the silence of my needs.

I can’t spell “happiness”
for an acrostic poem
when the blue bird doesn’t care
when or where it drops the used.

I can’t end the way I started
because, damn it, there’s no end
to the start of loving you
and I can’t damn up the flood
when it begins way out beyond,
or beneath, or above, or simply
in love.

I can and can’t and that’s a laugh
because the joker’s me
in this game of unfair dealing …
and stupid poetry!
