At this time of year The balls are filled With cloyed despair Incompetent debutantes, Or dowagers, who, with looks unfortunate, Cast their lines like limbs in various attitudes Beside imagined woes Caught between Wanting to get read and laid To rest these chickens cluck of death Love, (sex), desire, (sex), Their cherry orchard miseries When what they really need Is a shot of sin instead of tea And who in Moscow Do they think is listening . . . Save those who having managed school Prize themselves as intellectuals Too deep to sweat their brows Oh the Russian soul is full of woe Its idiom bereft of joy . . . That if it had no pain to sigh upon Would surely seek a sty |
