Against a southern facing wall
they bloom in the chill.
Brisk November winds bend them
without breaking their spirit;
and when these Oregon rains let up,
they open up for me,

~a bright orange sea of smiles~

Eschsholzia, the California poppy
smiling brightly
always takes me back home
to my birthplace,
to hike the trails along cliffs and canyons,
climb high above the seaside
to view breaking waves and dunes,
watch and listen to seagulls
dance within the winds.

And when November brings a chill
of sadness or momentary despair,
I am grateful for their small smiles,
the way they nod off when the sun hides.
They always seem to re-appear
when I am in need
of a warm smile.

*smiling and shaking my head*

One of these days my head will quit making those improper connections...well, it's something to strive for anyhow. *wink*

The California Poppy! Another story entirely! One of these days I'll see one of those--until then, it's a lovely view through your pen.

Poppies...heh.

geez

and OH. gleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

(Wizard of Oz comes on tonight!)<--see? weird connections--must be loose wires, huh?

and thanks Kacy...the only time I've ever seen these, they were paper or silk.

I'd love to go picking wildflowers with you.

LOL, those other poppies give smiles in a totally different way.
a wildflower hike with you
that would be so outrageously cool!

for me, its the straw colored stalk weeds on the roadside, that no one really notices, how they stand tall as straws, at attention, even in the harshest of winds, they are troopers......

hail to the hardy they got spunk, i love spunk
poppy and weed alike

I too love poppies Kacy..
have them in all colours in my garden.

Hugs for this lovely.

Now - while the leaves still dance on the wind
While the moon and the clouds come spinning
Will you whisper my name again?
Again...and again...

With many years in California, I too love poppies.  Somehow, they always bring to mind "In Flanders Fields", John McCrae's immortal tribute to the fallen of World War I.  How neat to see your joy in this flower, written so closely to November 11, when the armistice for that war is celebrated.
A wildflower hike is always good for the soul.  Ken

Through rubble and trouble and dark of night
The yawn of a dawn will hasten the light
