Against a southern facing wall they bloom in the chill. Brisk November winds bend them without breaking their spirit; and when these Oregon rains let up, they open up for me, ~a bright orange sea of smiles~ Eschsholzia, the California poppy smiling brightly always takes me back home to my birthplace, to hike the trails along cliffs and canyons, climb high above the seaside to view breaking waves and dunes, watch and listen to seagulls dance within the winds. And when November brings a chill of sadness or momentary despair, I am grateful for their small smiles, the way they nod off when the sun hides. They always seem to re-appear when I am in need of a warm smile. |

With many years in California, I too love poppies. Somehow, they always bring to mind "In Flanders Fields", John McCrae's immortal tribute to the fallen of World War I. How neat to see your joy in this flower, written so closely to November 11, when the armistice for that war is celebrated. A wildflower hike is always good for the soul.
