When Rachel Carson wrote the book, "Silent Spring" the premise was that song birds might disappear from an overabundance of toxic pesticides combined with careless destruction of habitat. Now enters a new deadly threat, an avian flu that might annihilate many migratory wild birds who unknowingly flew into dangerous flyways and byways. Listen to the songbirds, enjoy their melodies. Record them for posterity, not just prosperity. For there yet may be glooming on the horizon the dreaded forecast of a silent spring. |

I love your write but I hate the possible outcome. So I will pray that there will be a songful spring every year Tom |

Oh, Kacy ... let's pray this never happens. I do know that a whole flock of swans were taken by that terrible flu, somewhere in Europe I believe. Our feathered friends large or small give us such joy in colour and song, what a tragedy it would be to lose them. Thankyou for this. hugs, Chris Poetry is an echo, asking a shadow to dance. |

Kacy, I cannot even imagine a spring without the robin's song. I do hope this bird flu can be controlled quickly. Congrats on your 21,000 sterling posts! ~Smiles & Hugs, Nancy~ ~Time has cast a spell on you, |

Chills here. Kacy, I read that book my freshman year in college so I know it well as most of us our age do. Let's hope it never happens either way. The birds here in Houston were affected last year and dying by the hoards from West Nile virus, which affects humans, too -- this affected particularly the crows and doves....broke my heart. This year, there have not been as many warnings...but I wonder. *hugs*...jo |

I hope it doesn't reach the California Gnatcatchers that nest in my orange trees, or the Peregrine falcon whose chosen roost is the ornamental plum in my side yard.... may this new scare prove to be as false as Ms Carson's. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> ______________Ratleader______________ |
