A black coat, with a hangman's hood
Is filled with moth and mouse holes-
Of street-light, sealed beams
And tarmac designates- the city
Stirs awake, just before dawn-
Yawning at hints, that near is day.

Four am, long flight; below
A kitchen light tears another gape.
A mother stirs from restless sleep
To greet in tears, the coming of the plane...

She bears a cargo also,
Not cold-solids, but fluids
Of human sadness: out of balance,
Unlike the plane
She is overburdened,
Her spirit feathers shattered-
As forever she will drag
A maimed and useless wing;
Grounded-overburdened
By the unliftable weight
Of a thousand broken dreams.

The dark wrap is now in shreds,
Torn to yellow ribbons by daylight-
The plane, unloaded, realights-
Going east on another, mission flight,
To make more sad returns disguised
By darkness-cloaked beneath
The black death-hood
Of a different night.

So...that is where
the pink contrail led
from yestermorn's light
overhead...

I had wondered
where it might have
been headed...

now I know.

May her spirit feathers mend and lift her high into a sunlit sky of dreams to be realized.

An engaging write!

Thank you all for reading and the replies...

This was written on the day that the 2000th soldier was killed in Iraq..well shortly before...That awful figure promted this from me...

Sorry about that Jo, I should have put out the hanky alert...
