This Unending Nite

~ Linda L. Dowd ~

By shuttered window, I sit
in ponder with feather quill
poised in mine listless hand.
Lantern lights dance among
mid-of-nite shadows across
barren pieces of parchment
that lay before me. Words
flow not, this cold, November
nite as I sit lost in
contemplation.
Mine thoughts, once limpid,
be lost in the engulfing haze
of misty past. Fragments of
lost memories spin before mine
fading mind’s eye and I make
neither hide nor hair of them.
As the lantern flame flickers
and dims, I fear......

Light! Let there be light to
brighten this ebon night of
darkness. Illume these hours
with clarity of thought that
these eyes might pierce the
veils that falleth before mine
ashen face and heart.
In defiance of ensuing blackness,
I clutch tear-stained parchment
and press it to mine heaving
breast whilst I cry out, “Save me!
Save me from mine own self!
I shall not slip silently into
this unending nite!"

That's the spirit! This is a different style than I'm used to reading from you, but I like it a lot. Well done! It's great to read you.

GG ~

Where on Earth have you been! I hope that you are feeling better than you were, dear Golden Girl.

It was good to hear from you this evening.
Yes, this is not my usual style of writing, but I have written well over a hundred dark and dreary free-verse poems! I love writing them! ~ and my Molly Sunshine ones as well! I guess  I'm just your regular ole yin/yangy kinda "angel" poet!

Sweet dreams!
Hugs with love,
Linda

Hi, Tom! I hope that you are getting your life back in order after the travails of Katrina.

Thanks for the nice comment. As I wrote this poem, it took on a life of its own. It is about a poet who is on the brink of dementia and is losing his memory. Gosh, I hope this isn't a prophetic write!

It was good to hear from you! Take care, Dear Smokey!

Tom, it's good to know that you are doing fine! However, I surmise that it is because you have an indominatible spirit!

~ and may the insurance companies be agreeable ~ and generous!

Thank you for the kind words. They mean a great deal to me. They spur me on to write more poetry!

Dear kindred spirit.....you do free verse so well!  I saw a dramatic picture here and felt like you were picking up on someone else ... not your own feelings but yet your own feelings ... that empathy showing thru again.  Better not be you....lol   ....jo

No, sweet friend. 'Tis not I. I have come to realize, that my poems in free verse have always be written from passions that well up within me. The words flow easily and quickly onto the page as if they take on lives of their own. I pay no heed to metre or rhyme ~ I just write...

Have a glorious day!

Loves 'n hugs,
Linda

(big angel hugs) Awwwwww, I can relate to these emotions ever too well when I was a little boy and was scared of falling asleep because of nightmares and such and I pleaded for just what you express here! (sigh) This is a wonderful sympathetic write so many can easily relate to and can be wonderful therapy for the heart, yay, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Noah ~

In to every life, some rain must fall. Sometimes the yin in me pours onto the page. I have experienced every emotion imaginable and stored it in a repository from which I draw when I write. Some thing, or some one, can be the trigger for it all to come pouring out of me when I least expect it!

It was good to hear from you, my angel friend!

Loveya!

I derailed entirely on this -- because I have been writing with a feather quill lately.

Lost the stylus for my palmtop, and it makes a fine replacement, for a poet anyway....

This was like a scene from Shakespeare...the heroine waiting for her love to return and dreading the solo cold of the night...longing to be held within the arms of her beau...enjoyed this ....but i always like your mind Linda...thank you..

Ed, I can envision you with feathered quill poised above the parchment. Your face is pensive in the soft glow of lantern light that is reflected in your poet's pondering eyes.

Somehow I missed this one.  Earth Angel, you actually transported me right into the soul of this "writer," feeling his wrestling with thoughts and expression.  Oh, so often we do reach these points (everyone, but you I think....lol....you can write anything!).  Much enjoyed, dear friend.  hugeroonies........lily jo
