She’d passed away a week before, alone, she lived her years No one to note her passing, no one to shed some tears I volunteered to clean the house, her possessions weren’t that much A little bit of furniture, some dishes in a hutch Some pictures of a handsome man, in military dress A man who served his country in the Great World War, I’d guess And on the table, by a chair, a journal she had kept I started reading, page by page, until I finally wept She told the story of her life, and, of this handsome man They married out of high school, their life together planned He’d get a job, they’d have some kids, they couldn’t ask for more But, then the call to duty, he’d have to fight the war There were letters in the journal, that he had written home Fear and desperation, the words, a somber tome But, all throughout the letters, he made it very clear He loved her very deeply, he wished that she was near Then one day, in gallant form, a bullet took his life And left behind this woman, a widow and a wife She never loved another, for there was none she could No man ever tried for her, as if they understood So, she lived alone, with her memories and her love Writing in her journal to her husband up above She wrote him every day, just like he was right there It kept his presence all around, I felt it in the air The writing on the last page sent a lump into my throat And chilled me to the bone, when I saw the words she wrote “It’s time, my love, for me to come and be with you again This night I’ll pass, my soul will fly, and I will see you then” She died that night, she had to know, he’d walk her through the door And hold her in his arms so tight, hold her ever more I kept the journal for myself, I knew she wouldn’t mind A lasting treasure of her life, left for me to find. |

This was just an incredible poem that depicts a scene of something even I myself have seen far too often in a senior's home. This was just so very poignant, and heartfelt. I really enjoyed this, well done! I hope you won't mind I take a copy of it over to the lodge, the ladies can add it to their book of reading. Oh, and a very warm welcome to Passions, you are going to be a valuable new member that I can see. ~* Carpe' Diem *~ |

I wrote a poem quite similar to this many years ago... maybe it needs to be dusted off, to join this wonderful piece...side by side. Of course, this is as beautiful as the movie, "Somewhere in Time"... one of my most favorite stories... Very, very nice, Roger. Thank you! |

Not only did your lines and rhyme flow very nicely, but the way you told this, captured interest all the way through. Welcome, welcome. I'll be looking forward to more of your work. Do you give lessons? Rae |
