Handing the Wall First wet the wall. Be careful not to wet the ochre or you'll have to dry it at the fire again and scrape it back to dust. Just splash the water with your hand until the rock is wet enough. Take one of these chips and make a cut on the back of your hand. When you hand the wall the ochre goes in the cut. You rub it deep so the red will always stay and every time you see it you remember the day you handed the wall. Dry your hand and wipe the blood away. Take your reed and dip it in the ochre. Just push it in with your finger, and don't pack it. Dip until you have two fingers of ochre loose in the reed. Now put the reed into your mouth and press your hand hard against the rock; don't touch it with your tongue. Point straight at the cut on your hand and blow it, quick and hard. It's done. Your hand is part of the wall now, like all the other hands, and you are part of us. ------------------------- ....just another memory ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> ______________Ratleader______________ |

Ed....This is so interesting and reminds me of the handprints I used to do with the children in my classrooms... The memory is so detailed that it must be true!! |

I have seen figures and prints on a wall that touched me with their historical significance... Reading this, I'm swept back through time to the moment... to rituals that had deep personal and tribal meanings... without thought of what some weary tourist might think some centuries later. This seeps into my soul even as the ochre seals the cut... Fantastic write!! |

Ed, I going to have to create a file just for you if you keep this up. Again, I want your permission to have this in my WORD file of poems by others. There must be something in the air; there's some stand alone really good stuff showing up here. John |

Absolutely, John -- carte blanche...and how not? It's a kind of recognition, of honor, that can't even be sought. I didn't mention and should have....you spoke of Randall Jarrell -- Once upon a time, I found a poem in an encyclopedia. I may have been twelve or thirteen at the time....and the poem rocked my world as a poet. It literally changed my direction because it showed me that a poem could hit hard...not just paint a pretty picture. The name of the poem was The Death Of The Ball Turret Gunner." ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> ______________Ratleader______________ |
