The woman's portrait which took all day does not show perhaps the exact line of light entering at the precise time, the living room-studio in which she stood for two hours, unnaturally still. There is about all this the hungering for attention, or an unexpectedly occurring event she wills it against reason a line of pictures streamed through her mind as the artist gets ready then parades herself proudly in a child's smile...{an amber ring discarded} a fading insistence of white flowers in shadow. She turns to capture the best angle… the light is dimming changing. |

Always an interesting read Nancy ... does anyone really capture the moment with a photograph? You do it better, with words |

The warmth of the picture is brought out in the softness, the quietness of the words. I love the secondary thought of "an amber ring discarded." how it is almost whispered. Beautiful read. |

The portrait you painted with your words surpasses the portrait painted by the artist's paint brush. Linda |

Oh, I do like this one, Nancy How it comes around full circle, giving full credit to artist and subject by close and careful examination...and yet the artist and subject have become much more than the sum of their parts, that is to say that it is by poetry that the painter and model, considered one plus one in arithmetic terms adds to many more than two when the scene is put to poetry, especially by the hand of one so polished in wordcraft. The woman has stood in the same place for two hours, and the light and shadow have changed...But, perhaps more importantly, so has she , and also the artist..her standing was "unnaturally still" exactly, but in reality her body was moving constantly, changing like the light. "There is about all this the hungering for attention" Indeed so, a hungering for attention, in both the artist and subject...a very important part of this poem, well stated. "(she) parades herself proudly in a child's smile...{an amber ring discarded} a fading insistence of white flowers in shadow." Yes, she does. So here we have an exposition of human vanity, the desire to remain youthful ...parading, proudly around with a child's smile... Also giving in to odd social value...the thought that things virginal are of higher value than things not...a giving in to juvenile, masculine thought perhaps. ..."{an amber ring discarded}" she is not married Do the white flowers signify virginity? "She turns to capture the best angle… the light is dimming changing." There it is, that most important demonstration of the poets art, the full circle, in the last stanza- The connection to root... There is much more to these words than meets the eye, more that what image meets the painters eye, or the eye of the model... These words explain what meets the poets eye, and to me, are much more important, and profound than the rest of the trinity... The beauty of the subject will fade, as will overtime, the painter and his canvas.. But the poets words are immortal. Thank you, Nancy, as you can tell, I enjoyed this poem... -----------------ice ><> |

Wow! Ford thank you so much for your insightfulness! One quick note..the discarded amber ring. Perhaps she is married but does not want anyone or someone to notice the ring in the portrait, therefore removes it? I appreciate your thoughts SO much. Hugs~Nancy |
