The Farmer and the Rain Sweet summer rain deftly augers its destined trail beneath the worn soles of a weathered spirit. Crops all but lost to sweltering air once dry beyond days of reasoning. So it begins, a new day falls heavily upon humbled home, and desperate fields. Yet, the salt stays heavily upon broken shoulders. Even amidst the rain his brow furls, and his eyes weep. His breath unquenched still heaves upon a burdened breast. And yet he remains amidst gasping fissures, and dusted crops. Ever searching the crowding hues of twilight, the serenity of dawn, and the infinite majesty of the Heavens soaked in stars for another taste of sweet summer rain. Copyright, Kevin V. Reese, 2005 |

If a rain dance will help, I'll go get myself some moccassins and start dancing! "Yet, the salt stays heavily upon broken shoulders." ~ Heart-breaking. Linda |

Thank you so much for your kind replies. A rain-dance might help! I sure hope so! We just received a little bit. We had a nice storm at the end of April that brought among other things, much rain and tornadoes. But not much since then. We received 50" of rain last year, but only about 13" so far this year. We are in extreme drought conditions. My tank (pond) is down 12" and the lake is down about 10 feet from what they say. Farmers are struggling quite a bit with irrigation. usually, in this part of Texas rain isn't an issue. Man, we need some good rain. I hope your right about the forecast. Go ahead and start that rain-dance. Cheers! Thanks for checking in and reading. It's good to be back! Kevin |

Kevo It rained here all last summer, plants rotted, crops drowned... I am a landscaper, out in all kinds of weather, dealing with the elements, just like the farmer in this poem, I know how he feels. But he is more important than me, he feeds us, and he takes his responsibility seriously... You have portrayed his feelings well... -----------ice ><> |

It would be wonderful to have 3-4 years of "Camelot" weather, wouldn't it, Kevin? Just enough rain and sunshine to make it right for all of the farmers and ranchers... Lived for about a decade on that edge - would still be out there, but life dealt a bend in the road. However, this doesn't keep me from praying for the ones that put food on our tables. I know whence it comes - and I also know that those that put it there don't want praise, just to see their own families' faces smile at what bounty can be placed before them, as the father/farmer/rancher shares with neighbors and friends... Yes, I know...as do you, the responsibility you bear. Thank you. |
